Task, Ambient and Wet-Zone Lighting

Good bathroom lighting requires three distinct layers working together. Each layer serves a different purpose and requires a different fixture type and placement strategy.

Task Lighting (Vanity Zone)

Task lighting at the vanity illuminates your face without casting shadows. Side-mounted sconces or a backlit mirror at face height work best. Overhead-only vanity lighting creates unflattering shadows under the eyes and chin.

Ambient Lighting (General Fill)

Ceiling-mounted or recessed fixtures provide general room illumination. In a bathroom without other light sources, a single overhead fixture tends to create harsh shadows throughout the room. A dimmer allows mood adjustment for evening use.

Wet-Zone Lighting (Shower and Tub)

Fixtures inside or directly over showers must be rated for wet locations per California Electrical Code. Fixtures in close proximity to showers or tubs but not inside them must be rated for damp locations. Correct rating is non-negotiable for safety and code compliance.

Fixture Placement and Shadow Control at the Mirror

The most common bathroom lighting mistake is relying on a single fixture mounted directly above the mirror. Light from directly above creates strong shadows under the nose, chin and eye sockets, making grooming tasks such as applying makeup or shaving more difficult. This shadow pattern is sometimes called the "Halloween effect."

Side-mounted sconces or vertical bar fixtures placed at face height on either side of the mirror provide even, flattering illumination from the correct angle. If only an overhead position is available, a wide-diffusion fixture or a backlit mirror that wraps light around the face edge can reduce the shadow effect.

Color Temperature and Color Rendering

Color temperature (measured in Kelvin) affects how the light appears and how it makes skin tones look at the mirror.

Color temperature comparison for bathroom lighting
RangeAppearanceBathroom Use
2700KWarm whiteRelaxing, flattering in tub zone
3000KWarm to neutralGood balance for vanity and ambient
3500KNeutral whiteAccurate for task lighting
4000K+Cool whiteCrisp but less flattering for skin tones

Color Rendering Index (CRI) of 90 or higher is generally recommended for vanity task lighting to accurately represent how makeup, skin and clothing colors will appear in other light environments.

Existing Wiring, Panel Capacity and Permits

Adding new light fixtures typically requires a licensed electrician to assess whether the existing circuit has capacity and whether new wiring or additional circuits are needed. In California, any new electrical work including adding circuits, outlets or switched lighting requires coordination with a licensed electrical contractor and may require a permit.

We identify the electrical scope required for your lighting plan and coordinate appropriately. If the bathroom lighting update is part of a broader remodel, we incorporate the electrical assessment at the planning stage to ensure wiring and lighting placement are coordinated before any walls close up.

Dimmer switches must be compatible with the specific LED fixtures selected. Not all dimmers work with all LED drivers. We verify compatibility before any fixtures are ordered or installed.
